It was reported that 1.8 billion people watch the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. If you Google, "What is the approximate population of the world?" the answer is 8.3 billion, and the math will say that 1.8 billion is 21.69% of the world's population. Which means over 21% of the world watch a soccer match where the score was 1 to 0 and wasn't scored until the 106th minute of the game.
Unless you are from Spain or Argentina, you probably didn't care which team won or lost. Every four years, the World Cup is played and how many previous champions can you name, along with the years they won? I couldn't name a single winner and the year that team won.
Why am I mentioning the World Cup?
Because, as exciting as the game may have been, its outcome held no eternal significance for most of those watching.
According to SBC statistics:
- 4.5 million people attend an SBC church.
- Of that 4.5 million, only 2.6 million participate in small group study (Sunday School).
- The 4.5 million in weekly attendance represents around 1.29% of the U.S. population.
A soccer game can gather 21% of the world that will watch an event for several hours, yet only about 1.29% of Americans gathers each Sunday to worship the King of Kings.
One event no eternal consequence… the other eternal consequences.
Over the past 19 years, the membership of the SBC has declined. Churches have close their doors, and membership rolls remain full of people who never show up. There are several factors that have help contribute to this decline, but one the greatest may be our failure to faithfully share the gospel.
The ALL IN Challenge has not stopped.
One part of the challenge is for each of us to have one gospel conversation every week.
Lifeway Research has reported:
- 27% church members rarely pray for evangelistic opportunities to share the gospel.
- 13% church members are not eager to talk about Jesus with others.
- 8% church members say they engage in conversation more than 11 times a year.
- 26% SBC churches recorded 0 baptisms in 2023.
These statistics reveal both a problem and the answer.
Why are so many churches ineffective in evangelism?
It is not because we lack the necessary tools, opportunities, or ability. We are surrounded every day by people who need Jesus.
The answer to our evangelism problem is not another program alone. The church must renew its commitment to personally and faithfully share the gospel.
Maybe you struggle with the thought of evangelism.
- Perhaps you feel nervous.
- Perhaps you feel unprepared.
- Perhaps you are uncertain about what to say.
- Or maybe you simply need to refresh your approach to sharing the gospel.
Evangelism Training
📅 August 1st
🕙 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
📍 Fellowship Hall
On August 1st, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, Oza Jones Jr., Director of Evangelism for Texas Baptists, will be here to provide practical evangelism training.
We live in a world shaped by pluralism, universalism, and secularism—a culture that increasingly believes Christianity should remain private and silent.
However, Jesus has not called His church to remain private or silent about the gospel.
He has commanded us to go and make disciples.
Evangelism does not have to be as difficult as we sometimes make it. We do not have to possess every answer or deliver a perfect presentation. We simply must be willing, prepared, and obedient—trusting the Holy Spirit to work as we faithfully share the good news of Jesus Christ.
Join us on August 1st from 10:00am - 12:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall as we learn how to faithfully and confidently share the gospel.
